It's Not a Fair Life

We look forward to the Alaska State Fair every year!  It is such an exciting opportunity for us to take the boys out for a day of games, rides, and...food.  And there it is: diabetes rearing its ugly head to rob our family of a very simple joy...Fair food.

It's not that Emmett can't have Fair food.  It's that managing his blood sugar becomes a near nightmare filled with stress and question marks.  His activity level is higher than normal.  His excitement is through the roof.  None of the foods come with accurate carb counts.  Combine those three elements together and we spend our time at the Fair worrying about uncontrolled highs and unexpected lows.

So what does a day at the Fair look like for us?  It looks like every other family enjoying the day, except that Talia and I are nervous wrecks worrying about the damage his little body will sustain if we don't keep his blood sugar under control while we're at the Fair.  It only takes minutes for something horrible to happen, and that thought is front and center in our minds the entire time.

We have successfully navigated two State Fairs now since diabetes entered our lives.  Last year came with a terrible scare that almost had us leaving the Fair for the ER, but this year went "smoothly", and as we continue to get better and better at managing his care, we look forward to many more years of the State Fair together.
